CHAPTER 5

‘Come on, pick up, Vixen,’ Nya was thinking as she listened to the phone ring. She had run away from the restaurant where she and Sal had been having dinner. Before she knew it, she was standing on the pier looking up at the stars. ‘I need to talk to my sister,’ she thought, so she dug her cell out of the pocket of her dress; the only thing she had brought with her.

“Hello?” Vixen answered sounding confused that Nya would be calling her.

“Hey, Lil’ Bit. How are you and my nephews doing?” she said trying to sound nonchalant.

“We are great, Nya. What’s wrong?”

“What makes you think there is something wrong? I am just calling to see how my sister and God babies are!” Nya said defensively. She loved the relationship she and Vixen had; MOST of the time. But this woman reading her mind was starting to get on her nerves.

“Well there is nothing wrong with it. You know I love hearing from my sister anytime she wants to talk,” Vixen started. She knew the defensiveness was Nya’s way of trying to distract from the fact that she was in distress and wanted to talk about it but also didn’t want to talk about it. Laughing to herself, Nya thought, ‘My inner circle is full of some complicated broads.’ “But I…” Vixen started to say but Nya cut her off.

“Sal told me he loves me and I actually believe him this time!” Nya said so quickly that Vixen almost missed it.

“Okayyyy,” Vixen said pausing to gather her thoughts before responding. “Should I…?” she started to say and Nya cut her off again before she could finish.

“Go ahead and call Phoenix!” Nya said. Nya knew that was what she was about to ask her and at this point she would take all the help she could get.

“Ok, Nya, Phoenix is on. What is wrong?” Vixen said.

“Nya, are you really calling us while you are on a vacation to Greece with that fine ass man?” Phoenix said. “Did he bring you to Mikonos like you thought?”

“No, he brought me to his family’s island,” Nya said.

“He has his own Greek isle? Seriously? Alright, Nya, if what you are calling about it not that you fucked Sal into a coma, I really do not want to hear it!” Phoenix said.

“He said that he loves me. He told me yesterday after we made love on his private beach,” Nya said walking on the pier marveling at the beautiful place this island was.

“Ok and the problem is….?” Phoenix said as she started to hum the theme music to Jeopardy.

“Nya, do you not want him to love you?” Vixen said over Phoenix’s humming.

“I will take ‘Nya is a damn fool for $500 Alex!’” Phoenix chimed in.

“Phoenix, that is not helpful. Let her talk,” Vixen said.

“I don’t know if that is what I want, V,” Nya said putting her head in her hands. “Sal is amazing; everything about him, even the parts that are asshole behavior. I mean this man has swept me away on a vacation that many women would sell their souls for.
